Yes, I've noticed a lot ...Thank you, kind sir!

Yes, I've noticed a lot more people walking here too, more every year. Which smokes electric cars and high-speed trains in the green department...

In our town we have the added benefit of a fairly substantial Mexican population, many of whom follow resource-conservative habits either out of necessity or habit. And if they aren't a good enough example there is a smaller population of so-called Mayans (tiny Indians from Guatemala), who speak neither English nor Spanish, who basically still live a 3rd world existence among the white giants.

I know a lot of the Trump-voting conservatives around here don't appreciate the presence of either, for understandable reasons, but I think both groups will end up being a general boon to our future in this region. I for one hope they stay. And start charging as much for their labor as the white boys do...

If you're ever down this way please stop by!
Cheers.Tripphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02881596459473088057noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010531067438362695.post-58891871521298270562019-03-10T05:55:01.783-07:002019-03-10T05:55:01.783-07:00That's a nice first post after your hiatus. T...That's a nice first post after your hiatus. The analogy between the Civil Rights movement versus what was growing organically, organic food movements versus USDA Organic, and the Green New Deal provides some thoughtful examples of what will likely happen should the Green New Deal be forced upon us. It's great that people are talking about our situation but as you pointed out, the main idea that needs to be carried away is that we're using too much.

It's heartening to hear that people there in your neck of the woods are making efforts at using less. Since coming back to Northeastern Minnesota after spending seven years in China, I've been disappointed to see things don't seem to have changed much here. Perhaps the one exception is that I have seen more people walking the streets, which is a big deal considering temperatures here are often hovering around 0 degrees for much of the winter. That people were probably forced into doing that though instead of voluntarily doing it, while very likely is the case, shows some of the benefits of living in town. It's a nice option to have. And a sustainable one. May you have the best of luck as you share, and teach, some options we have available during this descent.PRiZMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09973367029741699198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010531067438362695.post-14182546756910407062019-03-10T01:50:33.664-08:002019-03-10T01:50:33.664-08:00Exactly, David. And a big reason we moved back int...Exactly, David. And a big reason we moved back into town.

Greer's book "Retrotopia" was actually a major influencing factor on our decision to do so. I saw the citizenry of his imaginary future Toledo leading relatively normal and civilized lives despite the fact that they didn't have access to most of the energy and resources we have at our disposal today. And then it slowly dawned on me that I didn't have to don a hair shirt and live the life of a troglodyte. I could do my thing surrounded by other people and maybe end up having a larger positive impact on the trajectory of our town's future in the deal. Somebody needs to install that first passive solar water heater on the roof before they can become ubiquitous!

What concerns me most about the GND though is its promotion of technological solutions intended to keep business as usual spinning instead of focusing on behavioral innovation designed to adapt to changing stressors, which is much more in line with what's called for.

Electric cars aren't a solution, they make things worse. Much like solar panels installed on the north side of the roof because that's the side the faces the street...

Vegan diets aren't a solution, they are a personal choice. And not a terribly healthy one in my opinion. The only vegan I've ever met who struck me as generally healthy ate meat "medicinally." Here's your sign..

And of course this is just another plan to make decisions for other people instead of allowing an organic process, driven by environmental factors, work its magic (like it's already doing). This is the thrust of my essay.

Incremental organic processes work, and big top-down solutions don't. If we had any respect for the lessons of history this would be obvious. That it isn't is no surprise though. That's one of the more glaring bugs in the religion of Progress!

Thanks for stopping by, sir.
Tripp
Jessicahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17478662339232486078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010531067438362695.post-58106004978014047042019-03-09T18:39:04.650-08:002019-03-09T18:39:04.650-08:00I agree with 99% of your post. Big changes always result in some back sliding and sometimes self shaming (Why did i have that pizza last night, I'm soooo bad!"

I do think AOC's approach of thinking big has its use, it at least gets people talking. I think the GOPs glee at the Dems embracing the GND and giving them something to hammer the Dems with is going to back fire. The majority of people believe that climate change is real and we're causing it.

Its up to those of us in the trenches to show people that they CAN make changes in their lives for the better. Sounds like the beginning of a really bad joke. But those are the authors of a book called "Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail" (2011). These fellows decided to examine climate change, on the ground, through one crop. Being chili heads, they chose chiles. There trips into Mexico and the American Southwest, to talk to farmer and foragers are very interesting. I now have bottles of hot sauce sitting next to my stove. And, yes, it's almost as hot coming out, as going in :-).

Another book is "Taco, USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America" (Arellano, 2012). I've read all Arellano's books, and they're all quit good. And, he's really, really funny.

The Mexican folk in this small corner of western Washington seem to either be from the Mexican state of Jalisco, and seem to have the restaurant biz, cornered. Jalisco is a state along the Pacific coast, so, there's a lot of things on the menu you don't see in run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurants. Fish tacos. Shrimp nachos (to die for.) The construction guys all seem to come from Oaxaca. What's interesting, is that if they don't know your listening to them, they communicate with each other by whistling. The way they communicated from one mountain valley village, to the next.
